While studying at University of Miami School of Architecture, internships with faculty members, Jose Gelabert-Navia and Victor Dover of Dover Kohl & Partners, contributed greatly to Jason’s academic and professional development.  After receiving his Bachelor of Architecture in 1995, Jason advanced his study of traditional urbanism at the University of Miami and received his Master of Architecture in Suburb & Town Design under the tutelage of Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk and Andrés Duany.  After graduation, Jason spent a summer of internship at the Center for Urban and Community Design, documenting the urban neighborhoods of Little Havana.  Working closely with the director, Frank Martinez, he was soon hired to work in his architectural practice, Caruncho Martinez & Alvarez Architects, where he spent 4 years learning the craft of drawing, design and construction.  There he had the opportunity to work on several residential projects in the new towns of Windsor and Rosemary Beach.

In 2000, Jason found a new opportunity to work with Cooper Johnson Smith Architects, a traditional firm with extensive work in Seaside, Florida, and has been a part of the firm ever since.  His work includes a Palladio Award-winning beach house in Rosemary Beach and a variety of house typologies in Aragon, Alys Beach and Bon Secour, all New Urbanist developments in Florida and Alabama.  Jason has also worked on larger residential projects as large as 15,000 square feet and other building types, such as multi-family, mixed-use and resort buildings in the Tampa Bay area and the Caribbean. His background in urban design has afforded him unique opportunities to work on several planning projects including an award-winning HOPE VI project in Bradenton, Florida.  Jason has also been developing a transect-based method to organize architectural design guidelines for local municipalities that can be easily plugged into form-based codes.

Jason is a member of the Congress for the New Urbanism, the Institute for Classical Architecture, The Seaside Institute, and has recently become CNU-Accredited.
