John has won awards for architecture, urban design, historic preservation and architectural history, from organizations and publications ranging from Progressive Architecture and Metropolitan Home, to the National Book Award Foundation (with the first architecture book to be nominated for a National Book Award), to several chapters of the American Institute of Architects. After many years running a small office on the Green in Bedford Village, New York and teaching at the universities of Notre Dame and Miami, he has recently opened a new, collaborative practice in downtown Manhattan. With active working relationships with the best and most celebrated New Urbanists and Classical architects in the United States and Europe, John provides expert services for a broad range of interests, including New Urbanism, classical architecture, sustainability, and coding.
A founding member of the Congress for the New Urbanism (“The most important phenomenon to emerge in American architecture in the post-Cold War era.” The New York Times), John is the Chairman of the New York chapter, CNU New York. He is also a Director of the Institute of Classical Architecture & Classical America, Director Emeritus of Federated Conservationists of Westchester County, and a Designer at the Missippi Renewal Forum (after Hurricane Katrina.)
John was Town Architect of Seaside, Florida in 1986, called by TIME, “One of the most influential projects of the decade, and, hopefully, decades to come.”
John is co-author, with Robert A.M. Stern, New York 1900, Metropolitan Architecture & Urbanism and The Anglo-American Suburb. He has taught Architecture and Urban Design Studios at Notre Dame, the University of Miami, Georgia Tech and the ICA&CA. He is co-founder and moderator, the New Urban and Classical Councils. John’s degrees are Harvard College A.B. & University of Pennsylvania M.Arch.
