John Tittmann is an architect and partner at Albert, Righter & Tittmann Architects in Boston, which he founded in 1996 with Jacob Albert and Jim Righter. Their New England practice designs buildings of all scales, from single-family houses, to multi-unit housing, and institutional projects. The firm’s fresh, high-quality designs are often inspired by languages of the past, and always respond to technologies of today. The firm is at the vanguard of building low energy buildings and often incorporates Passive House standards to dramatically lower building energy costs.
AR&T’s award-winning work has been featured in numerous publications, including the monograph, New Classic American Houses: The Architecture of Albert, Righter & Tittmann.
John is a board member of the New England Chapter of the Institute of Classical Architecture and the New England Chapter of the Congress for New Urbanism. He is also president of the board of the Family to Family Project, a non-profit dedicated to helping homeless families. He is a painter and a furniture maker.
Prior to starting his own office, Tittmann Associates, in 1991, John’s professional career included stints at Allan Greenberg’s office in New Haven; Hardy, Holzman, & Pfeiffer in New York; I.M. Pei’s office in Paris; and at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and Booth/Hansen in Chicago. He also travelled extensively in Turkey researching Ionian temples with Thomas Gordon Smith.
He received his B.A. at Yale College and his M. Arch at Yale University. He taught under Vincent Scully while at Yale as a teaching assistant and later as an adjunct professor in the architecture school at the University of Illinois in Chicago.
