James L. Strickland, a native of Atlanta who received his Masters Degree in Architecture from Yale University in 1972, is the president and founder of Historical Concepts. Shortly after graduation, he started his own design-build firm and subsequently built over 300 homes in the metro-Atlanta region. In the early 1980s, however, Mr. Strickland began to focus his energies on design, specializing in traditional and vernacular architecture, and Historical Concepts was born. Since that time, Historical Concepts has evolved into a multi-discipline Place-Making firm offering residential architecture, commercial architecture and land planning services. The 30-person firm became a partnership in 2001 when long-time company members Aaron Daily, Terry Pylant and Todd Strickland were made partners. The firm has participated in nationally recognized projects, including many at the following locations: Newpoint (Beaufort, South Carolina), I'on (Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina), Spring Island (Okatie, South Carolina), Glenwood Park (Atlanta, Georgia), Palmetto Bluff (Bluffton, South Carolina), Ford Plantation (Richmond Hill, Georgia), Celebration (Orlando, Florida) and WaterColor (Santa Rosa Beach, Florida). Through these varied and award-winning projects, Historical Concepts has demonstrated the benefits of utilizing traditional principles of planning and design in new construction.
